Mitochondrial Dsyfunction – Mold, Viruses, Psychiatric Meds

Mitochondria are the cell’s battery pack.  They are an ancient structure present in every cell, which you inherit from your mother only.  When the mitochondria function properly, oxygen present in the blood is used to produce 38ATP through the Krebb’s cycle (most of you probably remember that name from high school biology).  ATP is the fuel that the cells can use.  This process is called aerobic metabolism .  When it functions well a person has lots of energy and can easily exercise.  When it doesn’t work well the cell is shortchanged of ATP, and ends up producing lactic acid instead.  This is known as anaerobic metabolism.  When a person exercises and lactic acid, not ATP, is produced, the tissue feels painful and inflamed, and the workout results in fatigue, not exhilaration. This is a defining symptom for chronic fatigue and is called post exertional fatigue by doctors.

Unfortunately the mitochondria, with its extensive inner and outer membranes, can be easily damaged by mold, viruses, heavy metals and many drugs.  Here is an article describing how all classes of psychiatric medication have been documented to destroy mitochondrial function.  This is one way in which psychiatric medication can cause harm, since damage to mitochondria is now understood to play a role in the pathogenesis of a wide range of seemingly unrelated disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disease, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, epilepsy, migraine headaches, strokes, neuropathic pain, Parkinson’s disease, ataxia, transient ischemic attack, cardiomyopathy, coronary artery disease, chronic fatigue syndromefibromyalgia, retinitis pigmentosa, diabetes, hepatitis C, and primary biliary cirrhosis”.

Fortunately the mitochondrial membranes can be repaired with a number of different nutritional supplements, and health can be restored – as long as the problem is recognized, and the offending toxins are removed.
